The McCloud River is broken into two sections, the Upper McCloud and the Lower McCloud separated by
McCloud Reservoir. McCloud Reservoir and the Lower McCloud have an air of mystery, usually due to the
fog, clouds, and drizzling rain. It also seems a little mysterious because William Randolph Hearst originally
built a large mansion and owns a great deal of property in the area.
The Lower McCloud can be a challenging river to fish and the fish can be difficult to entice with a fly.
There are rainbows and browns in various sizes from the dam all the way down river. Some distance below
Ah Di Nah campground, there are sections of river that are private property. The Lower river has special
regulations, including catch and release and artificial flies only.
