Owens River, California
The Lower Owens River flows out of Pleasant Valley Lake while the Middle Owens River, sometimes the
Owens River Gorge, flows 20 miles from Lake Crowley to Pleasant Valley Lake. The Lower Owens has
approximately three miles of Wild Trout water with special regulations. The Lower Owens is home to wild
browns until the water begins to warm down river. Fly fishers can encounter prolific insect hatches due to
the unique water chemistry of the Owens River.
The Lower Owens River is located in Inyo County, California near the town of Bishop. To find the Lower
Owens drive north out of Bishop on Hwy 395 to Pleasant Valley Dam Rd. Go right and follow the road to
the river. Access can be made from Pleasant Valley Dam Rd or by crossing the river to Chalk River Rd. Pay
attention to where you fly fish, because regulations vary based on where you fish in relation to the
footbridge near the campground.
