Pyramid Creek, California
Pyramid Creek originates in northern California's Desolation Wilderness and tumbles down a spectacular
cascade called Horsetail Falls. The trail following the creek is a popular day hiking destination, but it seems
that few fly fishers take Pyramid Creek seriously. This beautiful body of water has a healthy population of
Rainbow Trout and also some Browns. The fish are not big, but dappling a dry fly for few hours will yield a
double digit catch tally and a whole lot of fun.
This creek is off of California's Highway 50 between South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. It feeds the upper
reaches of the South Fork of the American River. To be more specific, this creek is just east of thelittle
"town" of Strawberry, at a place called Twin Bridges (Population: 10). To reach the creek, park on the north
side of Highway 50 in the parking lot at Pyramid Creek Trial head. After you pay the $3 parkingfee, just hike
up the trail and follow the sound of tumbling water.
