The South Fork of the American River is known more for it's history and whitewater rafting than it's fly
fishing. In 1848, gold was discovered in its stream bed at Sutter's Mill and most of the action on the South
Fork doesn't include a fly rod, but includes rubber rafts and paddles.
A relatively short drive from Sacramento, this river can satisfy Saturday afternoon urges to catch a few trout.
Access to the South Fork can be made from Hwy 50 after you pass through Placerville . The river follows
the highway and there are markers along the highway called "Mile Tracts".
Our last experience on the South Fork, led us to Mile Tract 41. We fished the pocket water upriver to the
town of Strawberry. Fishing a dry fly with a small nymph dropper was the ticket for our success on the
South Fork of the American.
