Upper Owens River, California
The Upper Owens River is a spring fed river and has one mile of public access at the Big Springs
Campground and past two privately owned ranches 10 miles of access is once again available above Lake
Crowley. As with most popular trout fisheries, special regulations may apply so do your homework before
setting out.
The Upper Owens can be a challenge to fly fishers of all skill levels. The fish are wary, have very little
cover, and wind can be a constant problem. There are some nice 12 inchers in the Upper Owens , but be
prepared for the unusually large rainbow or brown. Believe us, they are in there.
The Upper Owens can be accessed by turning east off of Hwy 395 onto Owens River Road, between
Mammoth and June Lake. Take the Owens River Road about 2 miles to Big Springs Campground. Hike down
the river and fish back. Dry flies, dry/dropper, and indicator nymphing can prove successful based on time
of the year you fish the Upper Owens.
