The West Dolores River is a tributary of the Dolores River, and yes, it's near the town of Dolores,
Colorado. The West Dolores runs along, surprisingly enough, West Dolores Road (Route 38). All along the
road from the confluence of the Dolores and West Dolores at Hwy 145, lies a string of private ranches,
limiting the access to the West Dolores River. After about 7 miles, there are a line of San Juan National
Forest campgrounds where the public fishing access begins.
Access to the West Dolores River can be made from the West Dolores Campground and Mavreeso
Campground. Stocked rainbows can provide an excellent day of angling. Whether nymphing or with dries, fly
fishers can put a big number on the board. Most of the rainbows are small, but respectable.
